To be “redeemed” is to be ransomed, delivered from bondage at a cost to the one redeeming.
Romans 5 describes perfectly this substitution of Christ in our place, the price at which we which bought:
“…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life” (v8-10).
A proclamation of having been redeemed is synonymous with humble confession that redemption was needed. What humility that should breed within the believer! The rescue has been provided by Christ—necessary because we were without recourse to save ourselves. There is no boasting in redemption as one redeemed, save in the One who does the redeeming! It is now-delivered white flag once raised!
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace…” (hey, that’s what’s on the back of this tee!)
Ephesians 1:7
“You have taken up my cause, O Lord; you have redeemed my life.”Lamentations 3:58
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…”Galatians 3:13a
“If man had his way, the plan of redemption would be an endless and bloody conflict. In reality, salvation was bought not by Jesus' fist, but by His nail-pierced hands; not by muscle but by love; not by vengeance but by forgiveness; not by force but by sacrifice. Jesus Christ our Lord surrendered in order that He might win; He destroyed His enemies by dying for them and conquered death by allowing death to conquer Him.”

“Rescuing souls is at the very foundation of the mission of God and at the heart of the grand story of redemption. Before the foundation of the world, God chose to rescue souls, and when the fullness of time had come, the Father sent the Son to rescue souls. The Son came to seek and to save that which was lost, and the Holy Spirit calls and regenerates the souls of all the Father has given to the Son. Our sovereign and triune God is the primary rescuer of lost souls.”
Burk Parsons
“By the pardon of sin, that is taken away which kept good things from us, and we are restored to the favor of God, who bestows good things on us. Think of the provocation; it was sin, and yet pardoned: how many the provocations, yet all pardoned! God is still forgiving, as we are still sinning and repenting. The body finds the melancholy consequences of Adam's offence, it is subject to many infirmities, and the soul also. Christ alone forgives all our sins; it is he alone who heals all our infirmities. And the person who finds his sin cured, has a well-grounded assurance that it is forgiven. When God, by the graces and comforts of his Spirit, recovers his people from their decays, and fills them with new life and joy, which is to them an earnest of eternal life and joy, they may then be said to return to the days of their youth.”
