To the humble servant of Christ leading his family, “Follow me as I follow Christ,” is not a boast of his great likeness to Christ — it is a prayer that he would reflect Christ to those the Lord has entrusted to him. It is a wholehearted declaration of dependence on the Spirit and a recognition that little eyes are watching, little hearts are learning, that his wife looks to him for shepherding and strength as he depends on Christ to love and to lead his family in humility and with grace. He is not just building a home — he is laying a foundation for the worship of Christ in his home.
True humility, strength and the ability to lead come from submission to Christ as the head of himself (this goes for every believer!). This shows us that the duty of a father is not perfection, but in seeking Christ that his family may follow in his footsteps, truly—Christ’s. It is not that they will not stumble, but that they keep their eyes on Christ and invite their family to walk with them toward Him in repentance and adoration.
Praise God for godly fathers—though they be imperfect vessels, the Lord is faithful to use them in the care and shepherding of their families. May they wholly rely on Christ as their head and, in turn, be as arrows pointing their homes to the Lord.
