The answer to the night we talked about from Psalm 42:5? The Lord Himself.
You may have heard the word “dayspring” in hymns or quotes. It is used to denote a new beginning through a new day,—a sunrise, in fact. More specifically as it’s used in Scripture, a reference to Christ. We see metaphors of light, day and newness used for Christ through the Old and New Testaments. He is the light for all men who would come to Him; “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him” (John 1:9-10)
We find it capitalized in the King James Version of Luke 1:78. Here is the New King James rendering:
“Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;
To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Luke 1:78-79
That glorious day after bitter night is Jesus. The answer to every inch of darkness is Jesus—in His sinless perfection, in His love for sinners that covers them once and for all, in His making of all things new. “Post reventas lux”—“after darkness—light.”
