Do you know that you are a theologian?
“Theologian”: a student of theology [the study of God and God’s relation to the world]. (Cambridge; Merriam-Webster).
“No Christian can avoid theology. Every Christian is a theologian. Perhaps not a theologian in the technical or professional sense, but a theologian nevertheless. The issue for Christians is not whether we are going to be theologians but whether we are going to be good theologians or bad ones.”
-RC Sproul
Further, in some sense, anyone we encounter has a theology of some sort—even those who are far from God. Make it a regular practice to cheerfully ask (with genuine love and sincerity) those you meet, “what do you believe?” It’s possible they are never otherwise prompted to share what they believe and you know…saying things out loud to another human being has a special way of getting it out one’s head for more objective analysis. Who better for them to process their thoughts and beliefs with than you who are equipped by the Holy Spirit to share truth? (1 Cor. 2:10-11). “Make the most of every opportunity” as Ephesians encourages us! The Lord uses you as a vessel—He does the work, friend! You are just the means—be used! Invite others into this seeking after understanding of God.
Be encouraged not only in the Lord’s use of you as a theologian to those around you but also for the gift in and of itself that such study and knowledge benefits your soul:
“Those that have such knowledge of the glory of God as to be changed into the same image, and to partake of his holiness, find it to be their perfection and glory; and the God they thus faithfully conform to they may cheerfully confide in, in their greatest straits.”
-Matthew Henry
