Sanctification and the assurance of it (and thus justification and the promise of glorification)—where do both come from?
Though God calls us to obey and submit to His Law for our good and His glory out of love for Him, our deeds are not the foundation of our faith or our assurance.
“Sanctification is the seed; assurance is the flower which grows out of it.”
—Thomas Watson
Who is Master Gardener tilling the ground, planting this seed, watering, tending this tender shoot? The Lord.
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
(Philippians 2:12-13).
The Lord is the one who cleanses your heart. He is the one who holds you and keeps you from falling, now and forever. He is both the author and the perfecter of your faith—He is trustworthy.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
(John 10:27-30)
You don’t sanctify yourself and you aren’t the one who keeps yourself from falling—that is why you can trust the promises. If the salvation of your soul hinged on your works and your faithfulness, you would certainly fall. It is only the work of Christ that can save you, keep you and assure you.
Look to Christ and His work on the cross for the assurance of your soul’s salvation. Anything else is shifting sand, saint.
“Assurance can never come by the works of the law. It is an evangelical virtue and can only reach us in a Gospel way.”
—Spurgeon
