Ephesians 3:18-20:

“…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

When I thought about the four petals/teardrops, my mind kind of wandered into lists of fours in Scripture; the 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), some pieces of prophecy in Daniel and Revelation, creation/foundation of the world (“four corners”) but what stuck out to me most prominently was the list of four in Ephesians 3:18; the breadth, length, height and depth of Christ’s love for His people.

Amen.”

Consider each “petal” and remember the qualities of the love of Christ:

Breadth: the extension of Christ’s love to all ages, ethnicities/cultures, and social class
Length: its neverending nature
Depth: it reaches to the lowest of us, dead in our sin and misery to do that which we cannot—save ourselves from our sin
Height: raising those in Christ to be seated with Him as a co-heir of Heaven

British minister and theologian, Matthew Henry, encourages us to reflect on these descriptors of Christ’s love in his commentary on Ephesians 3:18:

“It is observable how magnificently the apostle speaks of the love of Christ. The dimensions of redeeming love are admirable: The breadth, and length, and depth, and height. By enumerating these dimensions, the apostle designs to signify the exceeding greatness of the love of Christ, the unsearchable riches of his love, which is higher than heaven, deeper than hell, longer than the earth, and broader than the sea, Job 11:8, 9.”

If you trust in Christ and His sacrifice on the cross alone (nothing else needed!—“your money is no good here, madam!”) to pay for your sin—you, saint, can live so blissfully sure that this lavish love is for you! Nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39), nothing can pluck you out of His hand! (John 10:28-29). Your God is faithful and trustworthy to love your soul in keeping you ( Phil 1:6) as you are hidden in the Son (Colossians 3:3).
