A little 🔥 from Matthew Henry’s commentary on Phil. 4:4:
“It is our duty and privilege to rejoice in God, and to rejoice in him always; at all times, in all conditions; even when we suffer for him, or are afflicted by him. We must not think the worse of him or of his ways for the hardships we meet with in his service. There is enough in God to furnish us with matter of joy in the worst circumstance on earth…Joy in God is a duty of great consequence in the Christian life; and Christians need to be again and again called to it. If good men have not a continual feast, it is their own fault.”
Though it is a command, like all things—this is not a work we do to earn favor with God—like faith, it is a gift from the Holy Spirit in us! We cannot spin or toil to produce good works on our own any more than the lilies of the field. Even Noah with all of his obedience was gifted faith to be able to obey (Hebrews 11:7). We also cannot manufacture it apart from the work of the Spirit in our lives—it can only be produced by Him! (Galatians 5:22-23). Joy can feel like an ever-elusive state but the Spirit is good and gracious to provide such a disposition for believers.
Though our trials increase as we toil in this life, so does joy progressively grow as the Spirit kindly sanctifies us. We see ever more clearly that joy in Christ is the only unfailing and fixed certainty—the hope of Heaven in the finished work of the sinless Savior. Praise the Lamb!
