For Him

The creation account in Genesis provides the framework for human dignity: "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Gen. 1:26–27).

Creation in the image of God is what sets humans apart from all other creatures. The stamp of the image and likeness of God connects God and mankind uniquely. Though there is no biblical warrant for seeing man as godlike, there is a high dignity associated with this unique relationship to the Creator.”

Why is it wrong to murder? What’s immoral about infidelity or mistreating animals? Rape, racial discrimination? Where do we get any frame of reference for morality regarding these issues? Many outside the Church would decry those actions but...by what standard?⁣ We find the only objective, absolute standard for morality in God’s Word alone. Any other line we point to lacks footing, it’s ever-shifting. We know these things are sin because the Law is written on our hearts (Romans 2:15) by a good and gracious God that we might see our need for Christ. “What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’ But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”⁣ —Romans 7:7-12⁣ It is our hope that God would provide opportunities for the Gospel to be shared with this question. There is no Gospel without the Law. It shows us our sin and drives us to Christ. Give them the whole of two distinct parts, both the Good News of Christ Jesus that has the power to free from the inescapably necessary payment of sin and death on our behalf as well the Law that sets it up so beautifully. May they never be confused or conflated but always shared in tandem.

All people are made in God’s image, therefore we are to love and care for all people. There is either death in Adam or life in Christ for a man, no matter the differences our sinful hearts find reasons over which to bite and devour one another. This truth from God’s Word should inform our thoughts, actions and words; sincerely loving brother and neighbor, preaching the Gospel, making disciples and serving, not to turn brothers or neighbors away as if to say “be warmed and filled” without actually caring for needs.

This line is taken from the hymn “Arise, My Soul, Arise.” It’s as true now as it was written 278 years ago when this concept was much more controversial than it is today.

His blood atoned for every race,
His blood atoned for every race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.”

Our hope is that this tee might serve as a remind of the truth that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

This is the call we hear to come and die as we are initiated into the family of God. But it’s not once and done, is it? This call is also continual—we should not think that we move past repenting and believing after justification. Repenting and believing is, in one sense, a one-time call when faith first comes by hearing the Word of God (and we are made His and kept by His sovereignty and faithfulness), but in another sense it also continues in perpetuity as we are sanctified.

We do not grow out of repenting. We do not graduate from believing. These are day-in and day-out processes for the believer as a means of sanctification led and enabled by the Holy Spirit.⁣⁣
